雷锋出生于1940年12月18日，在湖南长沙一户贫苦的农民家里。1960年加入中国人民解放军，同年11月加入中国共产党。

1960年初夏，一个星期天上午，运输连给大家放了半天假。同志们有的上街买书、照相、逛公园，有的在连队读书、写信、换洗衣服。因为肚子疼，雷锋去团部开了点药。回来的路上看见本溪路小学正在施工，雷锋见了情不自禁地把衣袖一挽，也不顾肚子疼不疼，便推起小车，帮忙运砖一连干了几个小时。

1962年8月15日，天气阴沉，细雨霏霏。雷锋的战友乔安山驾驶13号车，从铁岭山区工地回到抚顺驻地。上午9点半，赶到部队营房。雷锋看见汽车溅满泥水，便让乔安山把车开到九连炊事室外的水龙头去洗洗，但是车要开到水龙头处必须经过九连连部房前和空地晒衣绳之间的狭窄土道。雷锋站在左前方指挥着，就在快要通过的时候，突然车的左后轮滑进路边的小沟，车身猛地颠了一下，撞倒了一根晾衣服的杆子，杆子击中了雷锋头部，导致颅骨损伤及脑机能障碍。结果西部职工医院抢救无效，年仅22岁的雷锋再也没有醒来。

一个年轻的生命就这样结束了。但他的灵魂，他的精神，还有他的故事，却如青松万古长青。
